Each week, hundreds of oil cars, each a potential fireball, pass through Wauwatosa. Monday, July 6, is the second anniversary of the tragic Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, oil train catastrophe that killed 47 people. The Stop Oil Trains week of action will call attention to the growing threat of oil trains across North America.
On Thursday, July 9, we will be calling attention to the danger these trains pose to our community. We are looking for vounteers to join us and hold the letters to our message:
BAN OIL-BOMB TRAINS
We'll meet at 4 p.m.
We plan to hold this action along the north side of State Street. Our sign will stretch eastward from 68th Street, to attract the greatest attention from the most drivers during rush hour and from shoppers at the Metcalfe's-anchored shopping center.
There is NO safe way to transport extreme tar sands and Bakken crude. Two years after Lac-Mégantic, oil trains keep exploding and carbon pollution keeps rising. Oil trains are a disaster for our health, our safety, and our climate.
There is a a lot in information about the dangers of the oil trains. Here's one place to start: http://walz-chojnacki.us/Pensees/?p=354
Our action is part of a national week of action to stop the oil trains. You can read about it at Stop Oil Trains Week of Action.
Please let us know if you can help share this important message with the members of our community.
We hope to see you on July 9 at 4 p.m., 68th & State
Thanks!
