Five-minute state action on health care

Call our state legislators to tell them you're in favor of the Health Care Consumer Protection Package, which would prohibit lifetime limits and prevent discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, among other things.

Call your state assembly rep (Dale Kooyenga, 608-266-9180, or Rob Hutton, 608-267-9836), and your state senator (Leah Vukmir, 608-266-2512).

The Health Care Protection Package includes:

  • LRB 1882/LRB 1151: Prohibiting lifetime and annual limits under health insurance policies and plans.
  • LRB 1881/LRB 1150: Prohibiting preexisting condition exclusion and rate setting based on preexisting conditions.
  • LRB 1884/LRB 1199: Requiring coverage and prohibiting cost sharing for preventive services under health insurance policies and plans
  • LRB 3444/LRB 2107: Coverage of certain essential health benefits

County Grounds Coalition scores another victory with County Board committee action

chair, County Grounds Coalition
member, Grassroots Tosa steering committee

Responding to our popular outpouring, the County Board Parks, Energy and Environment Committee voted May 16 to take all of the county-owned land in the Northeast Quadrant, including County Grounds Park and the Sanctuary Woods area, off the table for future development, at least for now, by deferring the issue to the discretion of the committee chair.

The entire committee appeared to be on our side — all of them, without dissent — and expressed a desire to preserve “what little land we have left.”

May 16, County Grounds Coalition to take it to the County Board

By Peter Abbott, chair, County Grounds Coalition
member, Grassroots Tosa Steering Committee

The victory for the Save the County Grounds campaign at last Tuesday night’s Common Council Community Affairs Committee meeting was an important step. But it was just that — a step — on that proverbial journey of a thousand miles.

We have to remember that the parkland developers want to carve out of County Grounds Park is still owned by Milwaukee County, so we still have to mobilize to keep the county from caving into the developers’ plans.

City Council committee takes Sanctuary Woods 'Off the Table'

A report from Peter Abbott

No two ways about it, the results of tonight's Community Affairs Committee meeting were a major milestone towards ultimate victory: saving the County Grounds. The committee voted unanimously not to proceed with discussions of the Life Sciences District Master Plan (LSDMP) unless the Sanctuary Woods area, the County Grounds Park, and the Department of Natural Resources' forest northwest of Swan Blvd. were "taken off the table" for future development by "whatever it takes" to do that, in the words of 8th District Ald. Jason Wilke.

Wauwatosa Library, Firefly Room,
7635 W. North Ave., Wauwatosa (map)

The Wisconsin District maps that were drawn in 2011 have been ruled unconstitutional by a federal panel of judges due to heavily partisan gerrymandering. The current legislature has been ordered by the court to redraw the state district map by November 2017. Now it is up to Wisconsin voters to hold the politicians accountable to make sure we get a fair map, drawn in a transparent and impartial manner.

Join Citizen Action, Grassroots North Shore, and OFA to hear from redistricting experts Sachin Chheda, State Sen. Dave Hansen, and former State Sen, Dan Theno.
